Cologne, Eau de Toilette, Eau de Parfum & Perfume Extract: What’s the Difference?

Fragrance Concentration: The Cornerstone of Perfume

When choosing a fragrance, you are not simply selecting a scent — you are choosing its intensity, longevity, and the way it lingers in the air. The four main fragrance concentrations define how a perfume performs throughout the day, from morning to night.

At its core, a perfume is a blend of fragrance oils — natural or synthetic — diluted in alcohol, sometimes with a small amount of water. The concentration of these aromatic compounds determines whether a fragrance is a cologne, eau de toilette, eau de parfum, or perfume extract.

Fragrance concentration is not only about strength. It shapes how notes develop over time, how long a perfume lasts on the skin, and how its sillage evolves throughout the day. It also influences how a fragrance interacts with your skin, revealing different facets as the hours pass.

The Four Fragrance Concentrations, from Lightest to Most Intense

Eau de Cologne

The Lightest Concentration (2–5%)

Born in the 18th century in the Rhineland city that gave it its name, Eau de Cologne is the oldest and freshest of all fragrance types. With a concentration of 2–5% aromatic compounds, it offers exceptional lightness and a naturally quick evaporation.

Its dominant notes are typically citrus, herbal, or aquatic, creating a fresh and uplifting scent. Eau de Cologne is applied generously, often several times throughout the day. It is a fragrance of the moment — effortless, luminous, and never overpowering.

Ideal for:
  • Summer and warm weather
  • Everyday wear with a subtle presence
  • Shared or professional environments

Eau de Toilette

The Balanced Concentration (5–15%)

The most widely available fragrance in perfumeries worldwide, Eau de Toilette lasts 3–5 hours depending on skin type and temperature. It offers a noticeable presence without ever being overpowering — a perfect balance that makes it a natural choice for everyday life.

With a concentration of 5–15%, it unfolds a full olfactory palette: fleeting top notes, a floral or spicy heart, and a woody or musky base. Eau de Toilette often serves as the first introduction to a fragrance’s universe, offering a versatile and approachable experience.

Ideal for:
  • Office and Meetings
  • Everyday Wear, All Seasons
  • Gifting Someone You Don’t Know Well

Eau de Parfum

The Intense Concentration (15–20%)

Richer and more enveloping, Eau de Parfum represents the most natural step up in fragrance intensity. With a concentration of 15–20%, it lasts 5–8 hours on the skin, revealing greater olfactory complexity and leaving a deeper, more memorable sillage.

It is especially appreciated in autumn and winter, when drier skin tends to absorb fragrances more quickly. Eau de Parfum is also the format that best showcases the base notes — precious woods, amber musks, and oriental resins — often forming the signature of a great fragrance.

It’s important to note that an Eau de Parfum is not simply a “stronger” version of its Eau de Toilette; perfumers often reformulate the composition so it expresses itself optimally in each concentration.

Perfume Extract — The Pinnacle of Perfumery

The Most Intense (20–40%)

Sometimes called “pure perfume,” Perfume Extract represents the highest fragrance concentration, ranging from 20–40% aromatic compounds depending on the house. Just a few drops are enough to create an olfactory presence that can last an entire day — sometimes lingering on clothing even the next day.

It is a fragrance experience in itself. While Eau de Toilette offers a clear and airy reading of a scent, Perfume Extract delivers a dense, intimate, almost tactile version. The notes unfold slowly, layer upon layer, creating harmonics that less concentrated formats cannot always express.

The price — often two to three times higher than Eau de Parfum — is justified on several levels. The amount needed is significantly smaller, which partly offsets the cost per use. More importantly, the raw materials in a Perfume Extract are often of exceptionally high quality: the high concentration demands a meticulous selection of components, as any imperfection is revealed without mercy.

How to Choose the Right Fragrance Concentration

Your Skin and Temperature: Key Factors

Heat naturally amplifies fragrances: wearing an Eau de Parfum on a hot summer day can project like a Perfume Extract. In summer, consider stepping down a level from your usual concentration. In winter, step up.

If your skin “eats” fragrances — meaning scents fade quickly on you — opt for a higher concentration. Eau de Parfum or Perfume Extract will carry you well past lunchtime, whereas an Eau de Toilette may already have disappeared.

Conversely, if you spend time in confined or shared spaces — open-plan offices, public transport — Eau de Toilette or Eau de Cologne are more considerate choices, allowing you to enjoy your fragrance without overwhelming others.

What Our Clients Ask Us

Can I wear an Eau de Parfum every day?
Absolutely. Today, it is the most commonly worn concentration for daily use, especially in autumn and winter. In summer, simply apply a lighter touch.

Which concentration is best as a gift?
If you don’t know the recipient’s fragrance habits, Eau de Parfum is a safe choice: noticeable enough to be appreciated, yet suitable for any season. For a more remarkable occasion, Perfume Extract is perceived as an exceptional gift.

Is Perfume Extract worth the price?
Yes. Only a small amount is needed, and the olfactory experience is unmatched. It’s an investment in long-lasting pleasure, not just a simple purchase.
