The Scented Experience

Wearing a perfume and scenting a home aren’t quite the same gesture. One accompanies a person, moves with them, evolves against their skin. The other stays put, settles into a room, marks a moment rather than a body. That’s what makes a scented candle so particular: it doesn’t tell people who you are, but the atmosphere you want to create around you, for yourself as much as for anyone who walks into the room. In autumn, as days grow shorter and we’re glad to retreat into the shelter of home, this gesture takes on a particular meaning: closing the door, drawing the curtains, and trying to recreate indoors that enveloping warmth left behind outside.
